Manitoba Driver's Licence/Identification Card

Last changed: November 13, 2023

This guide covers changing your name/gender marker on your Manitoba driver’s licence or Manitoba Identification Card1 through Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).

Warning

If changing your name: Once your legal name has changed (i.e. when you receive your new document(s) from Vital Statistics), you have 15 days to update your driver’s licence or ID card, plus any vehicle registrations.2

What You Can Change

You can change your name on your licence or ID card once your legal name has been changed. (If it has not yet been changed, see the guide for Vital Statistics.)

You can change your gender marker to “M” (male), “F” (female), “X”, or " " (a blank space).

What You’ll Need

Information

You do not need any prerequisite documents to change your gender marker on your licence or ID card. If you are not also changing your name, it can be done at no cost as well.

Wait Times

Your temporary licence or ID card will be given to you on site. Your permanent licence or ID card can be expected to arrive in 2-3 weeks.

Instructions

Go to an Autopac agent or an MPI service centre in person.3 If changing your name, bring your documents from Vital Statistics and $10. Your picture and signature will be taken, a temporary licence or ID card will be given to you, and a permanent licence or ID card will be sent to you in the mail, usually within 2-3 weeks.2

Information

If you prefer to do your name/gender marker change in a setting other than an Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre, you can call MPI by phone to make an appointment instead.2

Information

If you have any vehicle registrations under your name, these will be taken care of at the time you change your driver’s licence as well.
